Unused Offices Turned Into Employee Health Clinic

We have all been reading about companies that offer various programs promoting wellness in the workplace, and Indianapolis-based insurance agency OneAmerica is no different. Offering various programs like aerobics, weight loss contests, fitness centers and support groups to their employees is beneficial to both employees and the company itself.

OneAmerica was sitting on unused office space in the lower-level of their downtown Indy headquarters and wanted to get more out of their real estate. Working with Our Health, they decided to put a health clinic for employees located within their building.

The clinic would allow employees and family members to get checkups, flu shots, physicals, prescription drugs and other routine medical services without leaving the building and waiting in line at a physicians office. The result would be healthier employees without sacrificing too much time or productivity.

But in order for the idea to be a success, they had to make the space welcoming to emplyees as well as usable for medical staff and that is where Business Furniture came in.

Working with an interior designer and a Workplace Specialist from Business Furniture, the empty space was transformed into a working clinic with a spa-like atmosphere. Since it was situated in the lower-level of a skyscraper there were no windows letting natural light in. So the decision was made to bring natural tones for the walls and fabrics, and the reception desk was a beautiful granite.

The employee response was overwhelming and the color tones have been expanding from the clinic up the stairwells and into other areas of the lower-levels.

“It is surpassing any and all expectations we had,” says Debby Rout, Human Resources at OneAmerica. “We are averaging close to 100 appointments a week, have over 50 teams involved in our own biggest loser contest, and we are estimating that our employees are already being able to see savings by using the clinic. We are definitely on the cusp of a culture shift. It is really quite exciting.”

Working with our teams of designers and specialists, Business Furniture can bring reality to your company’s vision of a better workplace, even if the canvas is an empty level full of unused offices.
