CLIF Bar, a company known for its energy bars, faced challenges with their old office space. The space was divided and uninviting, hampering employee engagement and collaboration. Seeking a change, CLIF Bar partnered with BF+Co to create a more open and collaborative environment that would facilitate better teamwork and productivity.
CLIF Bar, which originated in California 30 years ago, has experienced significant growth. One of their major production facilities is located in Carmel, Indiana, employing over 400 people and operating around the clock. To support their workforce and enhance productivity, CLIF Bar recognized the need to renovate their existing space. The previous environment was described as stuffy, broken up, and lacking in appeal. CLIF Bar wanted a new workspace that fostered engagement, collaboration, and a sense of community, with an emphasis on inclusivity and diversity. The company aimed to provide a comfortable and inspiring environment for their employees.
The designers responded to the challenge by creating a welcoming space that incorporated vibrant colors, ample natural light, and an open layout. The goal was to inspire employees and cultivate a collaborative spirit by making everyone easily accessible and within reach. The General Manager of the bakery, David Tintelnot, emphasized the importance of facilitating communication and removing barriers to engagement. The new space achieved this by bringing employees closer together and enabling efficient interactions. "A space where everyone is within speaking distance, allowing them to ask questions, and get answers fast, making everything very easy" said Michael Fitz the production manager.

The renovated space spans two stories, each offering a distinct atmosphere that caters to different work preferences. The ground floor boasts abundant natural light, greenery, and an open layout, fostering collaboration, community, and easy information sharing. This floor encourages employees to ask questions and engage with one another. In contrast, the upper floor provides a more private working environment with specially designed pods that allow individuals to focus on specific tasks and take time for relaxation. The combination of these two floors empowers employees to choose the work environment that suits them best, whether that involves collaborative work or focused individual tasks.

“ Sometimes formal conference rooms are stuffy, and it doesn’t bring out creativity. I think being in these spaces with the all-natural light and the outdoors and the green walls really help inspire collaboration and inspiration.”
